Hair Transplant

This surgical procedure has shown fantastic results for hair loss.

It aims to relocate your own, stronger hairs, which are more resistant to thinning, to areas of the scalp where hair has already been lost or lacking thickness.

Overview

  • Hair transplant use the transfer of your own Follicular Units (FU) or hairs from an area at the back of the scalp, to the area of thinning or miniturised hair (hairline / crown etc).

  • The hair at the back of the scalp is more resistant to thinning. As such, these hair can be extracted and placed elsewhere on the scalp, where needed, to restore the appearance of thicker air.

Follicular unit (FU) is removed individually from the back of the scalp by a small, motorised surgical device.

FUs are then sorted by size and made ready for implantation.

Each FU is then inserted into tiny incisions in the recipient area in a meticulous and exact manor to achieve a natural look with maximal styling and coverage.

  • Each procedure length will depend on the planned number of grafts as well as a variety of patient and technical factors.

On average, cases will take 6+ hours.

  • Hair can be washed after 3 days.

You need to avoid strenuous activity and bending forward for the first week. After this, a return to light exercise is possible. Return to normal exercise is usually around 2 weeks while swimming should usually be avoided for a month post-op.

  • A portion of the implanted hair will remain growing right from the operation, however, many hairs will initially fall out. The growth cycle of these hairs is around 3 months, when you will notice them returning in to their anagen (growth) phase again.

Noticeable changes occur around 3-6 months, with improved thickness and coverage. Maximal effects are achieved around 6-12 months.

  • Post operatively, there can be bruising and swelling of the scalp which can track down to the face. This usually recovers within a number of days and measures are taken to reduce this.

FUE transplant is an invasive procedure so there is a small risk of infection, though all measures are taken to avoid this.

Follicles can become embedded leading to folliculitis (aka in-growing hairs). These often need to be drained and the follicle removed.

This procedure is not “scar-less”. Many tiny (~1mm) scars are left on the back of the head. When the hair is worn longer than a number 3, these are hidden by the remaining hairs.
