Hair Transplant

At BHR we perform Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) transplant using latest techniques and technology. With this technique, individual follicles (follicular units) are taken from the back of the scalp, using a specialised motorised tool, and transferred to the bald / thinning areas of the scalp.

Overview

  • This is day procedure performed under local anaesthetic and light sedation.

In FUE, we transfer your own follicles from an area at the back of the scalp, to the area of thinning or miniaturised hair (hairline / crown etc).

  • The hair at the back of the scalp is more resistant to thinning. As such, these hair can be extracted and placed elsewhere on the scalp, where needed, to restore the appearance of thicker air.

Each Follicular unit (FU) is removed individually from the back of the scalp by a small, motorised surgical device.

FUs are then sorted by the number of contained hairs and made ready for implantation.

Each FU is then inserted into tiny incisions in the recipient area of the scalp in a meticulous and exact manor to achieve a natural look with maximal styling and coverage.

  • Each procedure length will depend on the planned number of grafts as well as a variety of patient and technical factors.

On average, cases will take 6+ hours.

  • At BHR we do not shave your head - this allows a more accurate implantation around existing hairs, as well as a more subtle post operative look and quicker return to work.

There will be scabbing and crusting on the scalp for the first week. The hair can be washed after 7 days to remove all of these.

The surgical sites at the back are covered by growing hair after 1-2 weeks.

You need to avoid strenuous activity and bending forward for the first week. After this, a return to light exercise is possible. Return to normal exercise and swimming is usually around 2 weeks.

  • A portion of the implanted hair will remain growing right from the operation, however, many hairs will initially fall out. The growth cycle of these hairs is around 3 months, when you will notice them returning in to their anagen (growth) phase again.

Noticeable changes occur around 3-6 months, with improved thickness and coverage. Maximal effects are achieved around 12+ months.

  • Post operatively, there can be bruising and swelling of the scalp which can track down to the face. This usually recovers within a number of days and measures are taken to reduce this.

FUE transplant is an invasive procedure so there is a small risk of infection, though all measures are taken to avoid this.

Follicles can become embedded leading to folliculitis (aka in-growing hairs). These need to be drained and the follicle removed.

This procedure is not “scar-less”. Many tiny (~1mm) scars are left on the back of the head. When the hair is worn longer than a number 3, these are hidden by the remaining hairs.
